So the awards have been given for the 15th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards (see list of winners at bottom of article). But I'm more interested in the costume major achievement awards: Who are these people and why have they been given the awards?
Euduardo Castro is a costume designer who's career has spanned almost 30 years. He started out working as an assistant to great costume designers Ann Roth, Theadora Van Runkle and Julie Weiss, before his debut as a designer on the forth series of Miami Vice (1987-88). He went on to design films and tv series such as Judging Amy (2001), Bride and Prejudice (2004) and most recently Ugly Betty (2006-08), Eastwick (2009-10), Castle (2010) and Once Upon a Time (2011-13) (which was noticeably NOT nominated - where they simply aware he was receiving a bigger award or was it overlooked for other reasons that I cannot work out? Am I the only one obsessed with this show??)
But I think it's safe to say that few costume designers have had such an influence on contemporary culture. What I find interesting about this list is these shows are very much a product of their time, and trying to make them even a few years earlier or later would be almost impossible. Once Upon a Time is very much a reflection of a modern obsession with fairy tales and fantasies, brought on by a recession hit era; Bride and Prejudice is a clear link to Bollywood being briefly in fashion; Judging Amy is a working single mother trying to juggle her modern lifestyle; Ugly Betty is a pre-Glee anti-fashionista geek chic champion that would not have been understood a few years earlier. And the way these characters dress has had a big influence on the fashions of the time. Castro has not just designed costumes, he's influence fashion for generations of television viewers.
Castro has been nominated for 5 Emmys and received 4 Costume Designers Guild Awards: 1 for Elvis and 3 for Ugly Betty.
But her CV also includes The Last Airbender (2009), Cirque du Freak: The Vampires Assistant (2009), X Men: The Last Stand (2004), National Treasure (2003), Seabiscuit (2001), The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000), Practical Magic (1998), Great Expectations (1997), The Devil's Advocate (1997), Lolita (1997), A Little Princess (1995) and The Quick and the Dead (1995)
That's a pretty impressive CV by anyone's standards. I'd be happy to have costumed just one of those films in my career. There is a definite fantasy/whimsy theme underlying her body of work.

CAREER ACHIEVEMENT IN FILM: Judianna Madovsky
Judianna Makovsky seems to have cornered the market for the slightly offbeat fantasy/whimsy/magic genre, peaking with Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone (2001) (yep she created the original look for the Harry Potter franchise costumes), the controversially costumed The Hunger Games (2011), and my personal favourite Pleasantville (1998) (I could gush about this film for hours if you let me!). Her earlier films include what was in my opinion Tom Hanks greatest film Big (1987), and the amazing Six Degrees of Seperation (1993)

Judianna has received 3 Academy Award nominations for Seabiscuit, Harry Potter, and Pleasantville (losing to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Moulin Rouge! and Shakespeare in Love respectively) but has not won any. The latter two I pleased to say she did win Costume Designers Guild Awards for though.
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD: David Le Vey
I love this award. David Le Vey is not a costume designer. He's an assistant costume designer and illustrator. But he's worked as hard as anyone so why should the designers be the only one's to get awards?His work includes Minority Report (2001), Titanic (1995), Legends of the Fall (1994) and Hook (1991)
